Restoring one of the world’s rarest Works rally cars
Full bare metal Triumph restorations completed
In 1946 Triumph created the 1800cc roadster using aluminium panels as steel was in short supply in post war Britain. But it is for the TR series of sports cars that the Triumph brand is best known. They began in 1953 with the Triumph TR2, a basic but enormously good fun sports car. By 1955 the TR3 featured more power and better braking and in 1961 the TR4 introduced wind up windows and the option of a unique hard top with a fixed glass rear window, an integral rollbar and a detachable, steel centre panel. This was the first such roof system on a production car and preceded the Targa roof that Porsche introduced, by 5 years.
In 1967 the TR5 introduced the 2.5 litre straight six engine with Lucas fuel injection, this proved to be a problematic solution and was revised for the TR6 of 1968 which became the best selling TR in the series. For those with a smaller budget the Triumph Spitfire is an exciting drive, but rust can be a serious structural issue and restoration costs can far outweigh a finished value.
In 1974 the TR7 carried the series on with a quintessentially 1970s wedge shape and a range of bright colours. These are thought of as being unloved but in fact they outsold the TR6 and have only recently become considered as ‘modern classics’ despite being over 40 years old.
We are currently working on the restoration of an extremely rare works TR4 rally car that has an illustrious rallying history.
